INS Chennai is built in Mazagon Dock Shipbuilder Ltd in Mumbai which marks the end of Project 15A to build Kolkata class guided missile destroyers.
This missile has an overall length of 164 metres, displacement of 7,500 tonnes and is armed with supersonic surface-to-surface BrahMos missile and Barak-8 long range surface of surface-to-air missile.
The ship was commissioned by defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Chief of Navy Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba was also present at the occasion.
Different trials are being conducted of the ship and after that it would be assigned in Indian Navy's fleet.
