National Press Day Celebrations On 16 November 2018: Details, Significance, Celebrations, History

National Press Day is celebrated on 16th November every year to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India. It is symbolic of a free and responsible press in India. 

Press Council of India was formed in 1966, the Press Council keeps a check on the quality of reportage provided by the Indian press. It has supreme power in regard to the media to ensure that freedom of speech is maintained. 

Press Council of India also ensures that journalistic objectivity is not compromised due to "influence or threats of any extraneous factors."

This year National Press Day-2018 is being celebrated with a two-day long seminar organised in New Delhi on 16th & 17th November 2018. It was inaugurated by Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitely.

Delegates from neighboring Press Councils of SAARC countries- Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives was present on the National Press Day-2018 occasion

On the occasion of National Press Day-2018, National Awards for Excellence in Journalism was also presented.
