The Ministry of State for Home Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju inaugurate the special Centre for Disaster Research at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi on 26 October 2017.

According to Shri Rijiju, The Centre has conceived three years ago and has now taken shape into multi-disciplinary Centre that will offer Masters and Doctors programmes in Disaster Risk Management (DRM).

Shri Rijiju has launched the JNU for taking an initiative in this regard and hoped more educational institution will come forward to conduct specialized studies in DRM.

This day marks a new beginning in DRM in line with ten-point agenda for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) given by the PM Narendra Modi, during the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) last year.

Underline the fact that India is a disaster-prone country and disaster will only grow in intensity and frequency, Shri Rijiju said, DRM education should be integrated into the educational institutions' curriculum to give a fillip to the culture of disaster preparedness.

The launched programme was part of two-day Seminar being organized by JNU on Disasters and Communicate Resilience in the Northeastern States.
