The International Day of Rural Women is celebrated every year on 15th October across the world to recognise the important role and contribution of rural women from around the world.
The International Day of Rural Women marks the significant role played by these rural women in food security and poverty elevation.
The International Day of Rural Women-2018, the theme is “Sustainable infrastructure, services and social protection for gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls”.
The International Day of Rural Women aims to highlight the role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women in enhancing rural and agricultural development, eradicating rural poverty and improving food security and ensuring sustainability of rural households and communities, improving rural livelihoods and overall wellbeing.
The International Day of Rural Women was instituted by the UN General Assembly by passing resolution 62/136 in December 2007.
The International Day of Rural Women was first celebrated on15 October 2008.
According to United Nations, empowerment of rural women is crucial for fulfilling a vision of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which aims at ending poverty and hunger, achieve food security and empower all women and girls.
Rural women, make up over a 1/4 of the total world population. Majority of rural women depend on natural resources and agriculture for their livelihood.
Rural women produce, prepare and process much of the food available, thereby giving them primary responsibility for food security.
As per the report, about 1.5 billion rural women were associated with the agriculture sector and were responsible for 50% of all food production and 25% of rural women in underdeveloped countries had no access to education.
