According to a study almost 80% of the domestic water supplies(both rural and urban) rely on groundwater and according to a report of
WorldBank India helds 25% of the groundwater abstraction due to its increasing number of dark zones.
Dark zones are thoseareas where groundwater consumption is overexploited and here the rate of annual consumption is more than the annual rate of
recharge of groundwater.
This scheme addresses our critical issues related to sustainable groundwater management.
1)Institutional framework specific to state for sustainable groundwater management.
2)Enhancement of groundwater recharge.
3)Strengthen the institutions based on communities to foster groundwater management.
4)Improvement of water use efficiency.
Construction of dams and new large scale irrigation systems is excluded from this Yojana.
