The Kazhuveli Wetland designated as 16th Bird Sanctuary Area, Geography
Surpiya Sahu, Environment and Forest Secretary, at the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, proclaimed the Kazhuveli wetland in Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district as the 16th Bird Sanctuary. The declaration was issued under section 18 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, subsection (1). The Kazhuveli wetlands are only second in size to Pulicat Lake in terms of Brackish Water Lakes in South India.
About Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary:
- It has a total area of 5,151.60 hectares in Vanur taluk and 3,027.25 hectares in Marakkanam taluks.
- The sanctuary is located on Tamil Nadu's east coast, near to the Bay of Bengal.
- The sanctuary is located on Tamil Nadu's east coast, near to the Bay of Bengal.
- Kazhuveli is a 670-square-kilometer wetland of worldwide significance on Tamil Nadu's east coast.
- In the year 2001, the southern section of the marsh was designated as conserved area.
- In the Villupuram district, the Sanctuary encompasses 13 villages.
- Long-distance migration birds from Central Asia and Siberia can be found here, as well as a broad range of flora and animals.
