Chinese Consul-General, Ma Zhanwu on 12th September 2018 visited Kolkata, he proclaimed that China is planning to propose bullet trains from Kolkata to Kunming City of China.
Although, he did not reveal the details of the route. The train is expected to traverse through Myanmar and Bangladesh.
The project was mentioned at the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) meet in Kunming in 2015.If the project becomes a reality, it will only take a few hours to reach Kolkata from Kunming. The whole of Asia will be connected. At present, Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan province, is only connected to Kolkata.
The bullet train service is also expected to give a boost to trade and commerce in the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor.
The Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor project, initiated by China, is projected to run through Mandalay in Myanmar, Chittagong and Dhaka in Bangladesh, terminating in Kolkata.
