Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh Election, Victory, Political Background 

Harivansh Narayan Singh of the JDU is the new deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha. He defeated BK Hari Prasad, the Congress nominee on 9th August 2018 Rajya Sabha election for deputy speaker.

Harivansh Narayan Singh is the first deputy chairperson to be elected by a division of votes in the Rajya Sabha since 1992+ when the then Congress candidate Najma Heptullah defeated the then TDP nominee Renuka Choudhary.

The village has a unique distinction of having expanse in two districts - Saran and Ballia - across two states, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Both states claim their authority over the village. Harivansh Narayan Singh was born on June 30, 1956.

Known as a close aide of Nitish Kumar, Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2014. He is a former journalist, known for his long innings with Hindi daily, Prabhat Khabar, based out of Ranchi, the Jharkhand capital.

Harivansh Narayan Singh has also worked with Bank of India for a brief period. He quit the job of bank officer to pursue his career in journalism. Harivansh Narayan Singh was the media advisor to former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar.

He is also known as the brain behind Nitish Kumar's demand for special status for Bihar. His election as the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha is expected to provide more steel to BJP-JDU ties in Bihar.
