In December 2013, the General Assembly designated the International Day in resolution 68/32 as a follow-up to the General Assembly's high-level discussion on nuclear disarmament held on September 26, 2013, in New York.
"International Day for the total elimination of Nuclear weapons" serves as a reminder of the necessity to abolish nuclear weapons, as well as the social and economic implications of keeping them in use. Since 2014, the United Nations has marked this Day every year, offering an opportunity for governments and some civil society to debate nuclear disarmament progress and priorities.
