Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in Nongpok Kakching, Imphal, Manipur. Chanu's first major breakthrough came at the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014. she won the silver medal in the 48kg weight category.
After that, she starts preparing for the Rio Olympics but she fails at the big stage. she was not able to lift the weight in clean & jerk section in all three attempts. After that, she bounces back in 2017 World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, California and won the gold medal. She became 2nd women after Karnam Malleswari to win the gold medal in World Championship.
She was nominated for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna-2018 for her achievements in her career. Award is given to her for last year achievement in last year. She will get a medal and 7.5 lakh from the government of India.
Before nominated for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, she was awarded Padma Shree by the government of India.
