In a significant development, to provide road connectivity in India's Frontier regions, Sikkim gets its longest highway tunnel named as 'Theng Tunnel' near Chungthang in North Sikkim.
Minister of State for Defence, Dr, Subhash Bhamre inaugurated the longest highway 'Theng Tunnel' on 8th June 2018.
The Theng tunnel is 578-Metre long and will benefit the Indian armed forces & tourism that rapidly propel the growth of the state.
The double-lane Theng tunnel stretching about 578 meters has been undertaken by Project Swastik, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation at a cost of over 42 crore rupees.
The Theng tunnel will improve connectivity in both North and East Sikkim, especially since the devastating 2011 earthquake had extensively damaged the link road.
The Theng tunnel provides a link between Gangtok and Chungthang and is equipped with LED lighting, a firefighting system, control room and emergency exit.
The Theng tunnel will also serve the Centre in ensuring greater border security.
