United Nations Introduces UN Road Safety Trust Fund- Details, Features, Purpose, Benefits

The United Nations recently had recently introduced the UN Road Safety Trust Fund for tackling and improving the road safety worldwide and to save lives and prevent the loss of opportunity associated with road accidents.

The United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed proclaimed the launch of the ‘UN Road Safety Trust Fund’on 12th April 2018. 

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is secretariat for the trust fund. The fund has potential to stimulate global efforts to address road safety situation.

The UN Road Safety Trust Fund aims to boost the five pillars of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. These five pillars include Strengthening road safety management capacities; Improved safety of road infrastructure and broader transport networks; Enhanced safety of vehicles; Improved behavior of road users and Improved post-crash care.

The UN Road Safety Trust Fund will mobilize resources from governments, intergovernmental or non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the private sector, philanthropic organizations and individuals.

The UN Road Safety Trust Fund will serve as a booster for much-needed progress towards road safety targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) also adopted a resolution on road safety, funded by Russia which aims at preventing road accidents and lessen the resulting damage.
