India has been ranked 136th among 163 countries on Global Peace Index-2018 while Iceland remained at the top position to rank 1st.
According to the report published by Sydney-based Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), India has moved up five places from 141st to the 136th rank, due to a reduction in the level of violent crime driven by increased law enforcement. It has gradually shown the decrease in the number of deaths.
On Global Peace Index-2018, Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. New Zealand (2nd rank), Austria (3rd rank), Portugal (4th rank) and Denmark (5th rank) also attained in the top five most peaceful rankings.
On Global Peace Index-2018, Syria remains the least peaceful country in the world, a position it has held for the past 5 years. Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq and Somalia comprise the remaining least peaceful countries.
Global Peace Index-2018 shows that the global level of peace has deteriorated by 0.27 % in 2017, marking the fourth successive year of deteriorations. 92 countries deteriorated, while 71 countries improved.
