Seetharaman was born on 18th August 1959 in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu.
She was born to father Shri Narayanan and mother Savitri.She is married to Dr.Parakala Prabhakar.
She obtained her B.A degree from Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy college and completed her M.A in economics from Jawahar Lal University, Delhi in 1980.
Seetharaman then worked for Waterhouse Coopers as Senior Manager and later on she worked for BBC World Service.
She is also one of the founding member of Pranava School in Hyderabad and was a member of National Commission for Women.

Seetharaman joined BJP in 2006 and was a big face of the party as she played an active role as spokesperson for BJP and its leaders.
In 2014, she joined Narendra Modi's Ministry and was working as a part of six spokesperson group lead by Ravishankar Prasad.
In the same year she was archaic in as Minister of state(independent charges) for ministery of Commerce and industry, also Minister of State for Finance and Corporate affairs which fall under Finance ministery, lead by Arun Jaitley.
She was given a seat of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka and was uplifted as Defence Minister on 3rd September 2017.
