NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission reaches the Asteroid Bennu on 3rd December 2018. The OSIRIS-REx mission -stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer will be NASA's first asteroid sample return mission.
The OSIRIS-REx mission was launched on 8th September 2016 and it will spend two years up close and personal with asteroid Bennu.
The OSIRIS-REx mission main aim is to study asteroid 101955 Bennu, a carbonaceous near-Earth asteroid, and return a sample to Earth on 24 September 2023 for detailed analysis.
An arm mechanism called TAGSAM will reach out to collect the sample from Bennu's surface, making contact with the asteroid for five seconds in July 2020.
The sample from Bennu will help scientists understand not only more about asteroids that could impact Earth but about how planets formed and life began.
The total cost of the OSIRIS-REx mission is approx US$800 million excluding the cost of Atlas V launch vehicle, which is about US$183.5 million.
