Famous social reformer and Sulabh International Founder, Bindeshwar Pathak has been honored with Japan's prestigious Nikkei Asia Prize.
The Nikkei Asia Prize award was given under Culture and Community category for his significant work in tackling poor hygiene and discrimination.
Bindeshwar Pathak has invented a low-cost two-pit pour-flush ecological compost toilet, known as the Sulabh toilet, for household use. The bacteria in the soil convert human waste into bio-fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that can raise agricultural productivity.
The Nikkei Asia Prize award was launched in 1996, the award honors people in Asia who have made significant contributions in one of the three areas: regional growth; science, technology and innovation; and culture and community.
Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Infosys Chairman Narayan Murthy are among the few Indians who have won the Nikkei Asia Prize in the past.

The Nikkei Asia Prize awards were created and presented by Nikkei Inc, one of the largest media corporations in Japan.
