World Science Day for Peace and Development 10 November: Theme, Details, History

Every year on November 10, the United Nations celebrates World Science Day for Peace and Development, an international day that recognizes the importance of science in society. It also emphasizes the importance of including the general public in discussions about new scientific challenges.

The theme of the day

The theme for 2021 is "Building Climate-Ready Communities."

On November 10, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) and its scientific communities and partners will host a number of activities at The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) Headquarters and The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) field offices in developing countries to commemorate the 20th anniversary of World Science Day for Peace and Development.

History of the day

Scientific literacy is a necessity for effective democratic processes because of the impact of science on people's daily lives and its deep societal ramifications, including ethical concerns. Many participants expressed support for increased public understanding of science during the World Conference on Science in Budapest, Hungary, in July 1999, which was co-organized by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) and the International Council for Science (now the International Science Council). Ethiopian and Malawian delegations, as well as the British Association for the Advancement of Science, recommended the creation of a World Science Day or Week.

Following that, the World Conference on Science developed an action plan called Science Agenda - Framework for Action, which advocated for a worldwide effort to promote broad-based scientific literacy and culture. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)'s Executive Board, which meets twice a year, responded to these concerns by urging that a feasibility study on a Science Day for Peace and Development be done during its 160th session (Paris, October 1999).

The feasibility study included extensive stakeholder input and was accepted by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)'s Executive Board during its 162nd Session in October 2000, before being endorsed by the UNESCO General Conference at its 31st Session (Paris, October–November 2001). Every two years, the General Conference of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) brings all of the organization's member states together to decide the biennial program and budget.
