INS Khanderi submarine Inducted Into Indian Navy: Details, Features, Capacity

India’s biggest warship builder Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), delivered the second of the 6 scorpene class submarine, Indian Naval Ship (INS) Khanderi to the Indian Navy in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

INS Khanderi submarine will be commissioned at Naval dockyard by the Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh on 28th September 2019.

INS Khanderi submarine is designed by French company Naval Group (earlier known as DCNS)

INS Khanderi submarine is named after wide snouted Sawfish, which is a deadly sea predator of the Indian Ocean.

INS Khanderi submarine can target submarines are well as surface ships. The weight of Khanderi is about 1775 tonnes.

INS Khanderi submarine inbuilt torpedoes can hunt surface ships as well as submarines. The torpedoes can be fired from six 21 inch tubes or SM.39 Exocet anti-ship missiles. In place of torpedoes and missiles, Khanderi can also carry 30 anti-ship mines.

INS Khanderi submarine will be useful for intelligence gathering and area surveillance operations.

The first of the scorpene submarine named INS Kalvari was commissioned in the year 2018. The last of the submarine is expected to be delivered by 2022.
